What is Rhinoplasty?

The nose is the focal point of your face. While the shape of your nose is usually inherited, its appearance can change due to birth defects, injuries or previous surgeries.

Surgery (Rhinoplasty) is a procedure that can help increase the fit of your nose by improving the appearance of it. The surgery can be used to change the shape, size and proportion of your nose. It can also be used to solve inhalation problems due to structural abnormalities in the nose, such as septum curvature.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures today.

How it’s done?

Rhinoplasty can be done with a small external incision on the inside of your nose or at the base of your nose, between the two nostrils. The surgeon will likely readjust the bone and cartilage under the skin.

The surgery is performed using either a closed procedure where the incisions are hidden inside the nose, or an open procedure where an incision is made across the columella -the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils-.

What is Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is performed to correct nasal obstructions such as bone and cartilage that divide the space between the two noses. It is also known as nasal septum deviation surgery, which is a surgical procedure applied to treat nasal congestion. This type of surgery is performed to correct the bone and cartilage that divides the space between the septum (two nostrils). If the person has a septum deviation, it makes it difficult to breathe through the nose. It also increases the risk of sinus infections due to inadequate drainage.

How is Septoplasty Surgery Performed?

  • Septoplasty is usually performed with general anesthesia, but it can sometimes be performed with local anesthesia and intravenous sedation (intravenous administration of anesthetic drugs). If general anesthesia is used, as in other surgeries, the person should not eat, drink or even chew gum the night before the procedure. Apart from this, if there are drugs and blood thinners used by the patient, they may be asked to take a break in order to avoid a possible risk. In addition, the use of supplements and additional forms such as vitamins should be discontinued for a certain period.
  • In surgery; First of all, small incisions are made in the nose and between the nostrils of the patient who receives general anesthesia. With these incisions made to access the septum and the mucous membrane, which is the protective sheath of the septum, is first removed. Then the deviated septum is brought to its correct position. If there are extra pieces of bone and cartilage that block the air flow, after all of them are cleaned, the mucous membrane is finally put back in its place.
  • Septoplasty operation takes between 30 and 90 minutes depending on the complexity of the nose problem in the person. If the nasal bones are crooked and pushing the septum to one side, multiple incisions may be needed to reposition the nasal bones. If the problem is a deviated septum along the bridge of the nose, small grafts (patches) may be needed to help fix it.

Minimally invasive methods have begun to be developed in the treatment of chronic sinusitis. In the past, incisions were made in the face and mouth in sinus surgeries. Today, endoscopic sinus surgery operation has given the opportunity to reach the diseased sinuses without the need for these incisions. In the treatment of chronic sinusitis, open surgeries were first defined, then functional endoscopic sinus surgery was developed, and finally the Balloon Sinuplasty technique was defined.
